Zoysia Sp., Zoysia Grass. This is one of the species from Southeast Asia, not the common Zoysia japonica. In this garden in the Royal Flora Ratchaphruek Gardens in Chiangmai Thailand it is being used to create a rolling floor for the living sculpture emerging from it. It's natural mounding habit is taken to the extreme in this garden. A framework was filled with soil to create this astounding visual effect. It is a slow growing grass, so it doesn't need to be cut often, but maintaining this must be a nightmare! Good thing labor is cheap in Thailand.
I have never seen this type of garden anywhere. I think Thailand have many gardens but this is really innovative. Nice work behind it.

You are right, Thailand has many gardens, but these gardens in Chiangmai are exceptional. Some very innovative ideas were used. I have seen some of these ideas in Paris,France, but never on this scale, or taken to this extreme. Look for a large blog post I am putting together on this garden in particular very soon.
